Frequently Asked Questions - Newsreader Setup What is Usenet news, anyway? Usenet is a world-wide publicly distributed discussion system. It consists of thousands of public "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically by subject. "Articles" or "messages" can be "posted" to these newsgroups by all Internet users having the appropriate software, and access to a news server. These articles are then broadcast to other interconnected computer systems via a wide variety of networks. Some newsgroups are "moderated"; in these newsgroups, the articles are first sent to a moderator for approval before appearing in the newsgroup. (For more information on Usenet, you can click here.) Cheetah Communications makes two separate news servers available to its customers. The first is news.qwest.net and is a fast, streamlined news server. To access this server, customers are advised to adjust their newsreader's "server" setting to news.qwest.net . No username or password authentication is required. The second source of news is addressed as news.cheetah.net , and requires a UserID (username and password) for access. This server may run a bit slower, and is uncensored. Therefore, it should be noted that this server contains newsgroups that some parents may find objectionable for their children to view. Any mention of usernames and passwords in the setup instructions that follow refer to this news server only. The UserID required for this server does not refer to your own username and login password, but rather to generic UserIDs that are valid for all Cheetah customers who choose to access this news server. To specify the news server name, select "View / Options... " within the Gravity newsreader. When the Options dialog box appears there will be several folder tabs for setting up your information, and you would want to start with the Setup folder tab. For
the "News server NNTP"
field please enter... The first server requires no authorization, but if you choose the second, the next step is to specify your UseID settings to pass the authorization process when accessing the news server. To specify these settings you would then select the "Advanced" button to open the Advanced Options dialog box. You would then enter your Username (Server account name) and your Password settings in the appropriate fields. The newsgroups list can then be downloaded by selecting "File / Connect" to login to the news server. The initial download of the newsgroups list may take a little time, but once the download is complete, Gravity will retain the list locally so that it doesn't have to be downloaded each time you access the service. The Mail & News Setup dialog box will appear with a scroll bar to the left and various options to choose from. You would first select the "News" option and then choose the "Add" button to open the Add a news server dialog box... For

If you have chosen the second server, then under the "Optional" section you would enter your Username and Password settings so that Cyberdog can connect to the news server and pass the authorization process. The authorization process is case sensitive so be sure to enter these settings in as they appear on your confirmation message. The newsgroups list can then be downloaded by selecting "Mail/News / Show News Groups" to display the news server address, then double-clicking the address would prompt you to retrieve the complete groups lists. The initial download of the newsgroups list may take a little time, but once the download is complete, Cyberdog will retain the list locally so that it doesn't have to be downloaded each time. To setup Free Agent to access the Cheetah news service there are a couple of settings that need to be in place, including the news server name as well as your UserID settings for the service (your username and password). To specify the news server name, this would be done by selecting "Options / General Preferences" within Free Agent. When the General Preferences dialog box appears there will be several folder tabs for setting up your information, and you would want to start with the "System" folder tab first. For

To configure Microsoft's Internet News to access the Cheetah news service, there are a couple of settings that need to be in place, including the news server name as well as your UserID (username and password) settings for the service. To add a new news server name to Internet News you would select " News / Options" to open the Option dialog box. You would then start by choosing the "Server" folder tab. Within

(A newsreader for the McIntosh computer) To setup MacSoup for accessing the Cheetah news service there are a couple of settings that need to be in place, including the news server name as well as your UserID settings for the service (username and password). Most newsreader applications will have an internal configuration to specify these settings but others, such as MacSoup, will require the use of Internet Config. Once Internet Config is open the "Internet Preferences" dialog box should appear and you would then want to select the News button. For
the "NNTP Host:"
field you would specify... The first server requires no authorization, but if you choose the second, you would then enter your username and password settings within the News Username and News Password fields. The authorization process is case sensitive so be sure to enter these settings in as they appear on your confirmation message. After Internet Config has these setting specified, you would open MacSoup to retrieve the newsgroups list. MacSoup would first need to create a settings file where it can store the newsgroups information and this would be done by selecting "File / New Settings File... " and assigning a name to this file. A window would then open with the name you had assigned it, and will have a field showing "(No Subscribed Groups)" and other settings related to email. Once this is appears, you would then select "Special / Show List of All Groups " to retrieve the newsgroups list. The initial download of the groups list may take a little time, but once the download is complete, MacSoup will retain the list locally so that it doesn't have to be downloaded each time. A subscribed list can be maintained by "dragging & dropping" a newsgroup(s) name from the groups list to the "(No Subscribed Groups)" area. (You can click here for more information on MacSoup.)
From Netscape's web browser, you would select "Window / Netscape News" to open its newsreader application. Once this opens, you would want to select "File / Open News Host..." and enter the appropriate news server name. When

dialog box opens you would want to specify... The first server requires no authorization, but if you choose the second, you'll find that the setup for Netscape News varies a little from other newsreader applications. While most newsreaders require your username and password to be setup internally, Netscape will prompt you for these settings instead. Once Netscape tries to connect to the news server, you would then be prompted for your Username and your Password settings, which are case-sensitive, to pass the authorization process. You would then go to the Options menu and check to see that the "Show All Newsgroups" option is selected. After this is chosen, you would then double-click the "+/-" symbol next to the news server name to initiate the newsgroups list download. The initial download of the newsgroups list may take a little time, but once the download is complete, Netscape will retain the list locally so that it doesn't have to be downloaded each time you access the service. (A newsreader for the McIntosh computer) There are a couple of variations of the Original NewsWatcher, from YA-NewsWatcher to MT-NewsWatcher, but the news server name and UserID setup is fairly consistent across these. To setup NewsWatcher, you would start by selecting "File / Preferences" to open the NewsWatcher Preferences dialog box. Within here there will be a pulldown menu for different Topics for setting up access to the news server. 1. Under the Server Addresses Topic - For
the "News Server:"
field you would want to specify... 2. Under the Remote Host InformationTopic - Be sure to 'de-select' the "Automatically get/put newsrc option". This option tries to retrieve the newsgroups list through FTP which isn't supported on the service. 3. Under the Authentication Topic - The first server requires no authorization, but if you choose the second, this is where you would enter your Username and Password settings. The authorization process is case sensitive so be sure to enter these settings in as they appear on your confirmation message. Be sure, if selecting the second server, to ' check' the "Always authenticate" option as well, so that your connection can pass the authorization process correctly. After these settings and options are specified, you can initiate the newsgroups list download by selecting "Special / Rebuild Full Group List". The initial download of the newsgroups list may take a little time, but once the download is complete, NewsWatcher will retain the list locally so that it doesn't have to be downloaded each time you access the service. The subscribe feature may also make it easier to keep up with newsgroups of interest. To setup NewsXpress to access the Cheetah news service there are a couple of settings that need to be in place. You would need to specify the news server name, as well as your UserID (username and password) settings for the service, which can be found above. To specify these settings, you would select "File / Options..." to open the Options dialog box and then select the " Servers and Directory" folder tab. These specific settings would can be found above. When Nuntius is first opened, it will show a News server dialog box with an empty field for the news server address. Within
this field would want to specify either... The first server requires no authorization, but if you choose the second, then please read further: Underneath this field there is an "Options.. ."; setting that needs to be selected to configure Nuntius correctly for the authentication process. Once the Preferences:News server dialog box opens, check the "Always Authenticate" connections options box and select OK. When you return to the News server dialog box, select OK to initiate your connection to the news server. If you've chosen the second server, a new dialog box would appear, titled Your Password is needed, where you would enter your username and password in their respective fields. Nuntius should then begin to retrieve the newsgroups list from the server. The initial download of the groups list may take a little time, but once the download is complete, Nuntius will retain the list locally so that it doesn't have to be downloaded each time. if you desire the first news server -or- 2. Specify Password: because the news server requires authentication to login, your username and password would need to be specified. Tin will utilize your login name as your Username setting so be sure these both match. Within the "$HOME/.newsauth" file your password should be entered as - newsservername

Choosing a Username: The login name to your system has to match your selected Username on the news service, because when the news server authenticates a user it will utilize that setting to login. While we can update your settings so that they are consistent, your UserID settings on the service would need to meet the same guidelines as when you initially signed up with the service. You would then use "rtin" or "tin -r" to access the news server.
To setup WinVN to access the Cheetah news service there are a couple of settings that need to be in place.
